Various numbers and letters are used to indicate the differences between first and second generation vehicles. The names of all cars belonging to the first generation begin with «J11» or «S11». This number is followed by a number that refers to the installed engine.
Second generation model names begin with «J63». And it is also followed by a number that refers to the installed engine. Specifications give values for individual models.
Various model names have been used over the years, starting with 2000 GTS and 2000 TSE for petrol models and Turbo D or Turbo DX for diesel models of the early years, 2000-1 (1986), ТХЕ (since 1988) to the latest titles «RN», «RT» and «RXE» since 1992 release.
The vehicles are equipped with four engines of different design and size. 1995 cc engine3 or carburetor (J6R) or with fuel injection (J7R). 2165 cc engine3 is probably the longest installed engine in length, has the designation «J7T» and equipped with a fuel injection system. 2848 cc V6 engine3 has the designation «Z7W» and is a modification of the V6 engine, previously installed on Renault cars. This engine is equipped with a fuel injection system.
The names used by Renault are not just letters and numbers, they have a specific meaning that is not known to most people. The names give explanations about the type of engine construction (first letter), valve control method and fuel preparation (number) and engine size (last letter). Below are a few examples:
