Differential seal
1. Apply the handbrake, then jack up the front of the vehicle and place it on axle stands. Remove the wheel.
2. Contact the Head Drive shafts and separate the drive shaft assembly from the transmission. Note that it is not necessary to remove the entire driveshaft, the shaft can be left attached to the hub assembly.
3. Gently press the stuffing box away from the outer wall of the transmission case (refer to accompanying illustration).
4. Wipe the stuffing box and casing and mark the depth of the stuffing box in the crankcase. Gently pry out the old seal with a small screwdriver (refer to accompanying illustration). This will cause some loss of liquid - substitute a suitable container under the hole.
5. Wipe the walls of the mounting hole in the crankcase and lubricate the sealing lip of the stuffing box with oil. Carefully slide the new oil seal onto the differential side gear shaft with the sealing lip inward. Push the stuffing box into working position (to the depth measured before removal), resting a piece of metal tube or head on its hard outer edge.
6. Install a new stuffing box.
7. Establish assemblage of a power shaft as it is described in the Head Drive shafts.
8. Check and, if necessary, top up the oil level in the final drive unit (contact the head Maintenance).
9. Install the wheel, lower the vehicle to the ground and tighten the wheel bolts to the torque given in the Specifications.
Differential bearing seal
1. The O-ring replacement procedure involves the removal of the bearing preload nuts, so it is recommended that this work be done by a Renault workshop.
Torque converter seal
1. Separate the transmission from the engine (refer to section Removal and installation of automatic transmission).
2. Remove the retaining strap and carefully remove the torque converter from the transmission shaft. Be prepared for liquid to come out.
3. Using a screwdriver, carefully pry the seal out of the torque converter, being careful not to scratch the walls.
4. Install the new seal in its working position by turning it with the sealing lip inward.
5. Lubricate the seal lip with clean transmission fluid and carefully place the torque converter on the transmission shaft.
6. Make sure the torque converter is properly engaged with the grooves of the transmission shaft, then install the transmission (refer to section Removal and installation of automatic transmission).
